I was on my way home from work and about a mile before my house my LS just died. I was still coasting and the lights and everything were still on but the engine was not running. I coasted to a safe place to pull over and tried to start it again and nothing.

After poking around a little I found that the fuel pump relay fuse in the kick panel fuse box was blown, the fuel pump fuse in the trunk was still fine though. I replaced the blown fuse and tried to start the car again and it blew another fuse. I checked a few more fuses and everything looked fine so I tried a new fuel pump relay fuse again and it blew right away.

What would cause this? It's 3am and I can't get the car home to really dig into it at all so any help would be appreciated. The car is a 2002 V8 with about 58.5K on it, mostly stock except for some stereo stuff and an upgraded alt (250 amp) It's been in there for a while though so I don't think that's the issue.

Thanks!

so the engine shut off but the eletronics kept going? sounds like what happened when my coils failed (5 out of 8 were dead) or maybe a tranny issue?

What would that have to do with the fuel pump relay fuse blowing though?

Sounds like you have a short in your wiring somewhere.
Of course, this is not related to any possible coil issues.

never had my fuel pump blow up, but since the car just stopped dead I was putting out my assumptions

The fuel pump didn't blow up just the fuse blew.

I had the car towed the mile back to my house today and I'm going to dig into it in the morning.

It's the #4 fuse in the kickpanel that keeps blowing.

Owners manual says it's for

"Cluster, PCM Relay, Fuel Pump Relay, REM, Transit Relay"

I replaced the fuse and I can turn the car to "ON" and it doesn't blow but when I try to start it it turns over for a min and then stops when the fuse blows.

Any suggestion on where to start looking in the AM?

I would like to give less generic help than this, but I only have gen II wiring diagrams. I would suggest that you get well stocked on fuses and try the following.
1. Remove the fuel pump and PCM relays. Does the fuse blow? If so, go to step 2, if not replace the PCM relay and try again. If it now blows, you know the problem is somewhere in that area. If not, then it must be somewhere in the fuel pump relay area. Try exchanging relays...

2. Disconnect the REM and see if the fuse still blows. If not, then the problem is with the REM, or something that it controls. If it does blow, go to step 3.

3. Disconnect the cluster and see if the fuse blows. If not, then the problem is probably the cluster. Lastly, if the fuse still blows with everything above disconnected, it is probably a shorted wire somewhere.

Problem solved, thanks for everyone's input.
