I got to do a high speed chase for a wholesaler I know. We caught the truck that had no paperwork and all his keys but I came pretty close to running out of gas. I was down to 6 liters and my CEL came on. Put some gas in it and the CEL went away.

Anyone else had this happen? Does it indicate any real problem?
 
Your fluctiptor valve probably got hot and burned out when it wasn't submerged in gas. You might want to start getting a rebuild savings fund in order.

Umm yes ... well i have everything in the mail to fix what's broke now and I am prepared to do whatever it takes.

I'll do a search for a fluctiptor valve. Un hun .. nothing, not surprised, but I'll keep my eyes and ears on.

I'll have my code reader in a few days. I will be trying it out. Why would it go away when I put gas in it though?

That is what I thought of first.

Any CEL is set because the EEC got an anomalous return from a device. A lean condition which the EEC cannot correct would do this. It's possible the fuel sensor, or even as Jacksun suggests the fruitimactor valve, threw an error signal when the fuel was low enough.

As the CEL is gone the EEC is no longer getting a bad return from whatever it was. I will wait and see if there are any stored codes when I get my tester..

I did not run out. I had 6 liters or 1.5 gallons when I put gas in it. The CEL was only on for a couple of miles.
 
i get an occasional CEL. usually EGR or o2 related. car runs fine. i have no idea whats going on.
 
Just found this in the Owner's Manual while looking for something else:

Running out of fuel

Avoid running out fuel because this situation may have an adverse affect on modern powertrain components. You may need to crank the engine several times before the system starts to pump fuel from the tank to the engine. If you run out of fuel, your Check Engine light may come on. For more information on the Check Engine light, refer to the Instrumentation chapter.
 
it wasnt the low fuel, it was the O2 sensor under the heavy hi speed load, mine did it weekly until the new O2 sensor.

you may or may not have also gotten rotten egg/sulfur smell during that run..?...?...?
 
The CEL only happened after I had caught the guy and was on my way to the gas station. I was not moving very fast at all.

I get the stink only if I get seriously into WOT. I was just running 80 - 90 down the road and she seems to like that.

I was low because I was going to my Chevron dealer in town 'cause he has the 94 octane goodness. I had no time to fuel up so that's why I almost ran out. Went back and filled up with 94 octane after.
 
When I first got my '93, and I leaned on it hard, the engine light would come on. Replaced the O2 sensors and it never did it again. Ran better too.

And probably increased your fuel milage a tad too
