The 96 tranny was acting up a bit shortly after fluid change/ shift kit/ accumulators upgrade. It would neutral out between 2/3. Drove me nuts, but it never happened before- so I figured it was the characteristics of the shift kit. I paid no mind to it.

So I'm in New Hampshire, driving the backroads at about 35mph and it neutrals out into 3rd: this time, for good. I lost 3/4. After chekcing the fluid, the level is good, fluid is new, there are no shavings, and no burning or metallic odors.

Now, I have to drive with the O/D off. I spin 2,000+ RPMs under 40mph. So of course, my fuel mileage has gone to sh!t and I can't use the highway as I'm spinning almost 5,000 RPMs at 65mph.

So is it the mechanical diode, or could it be the #2 solenoid? Is there any way of troubleshooting without having to drop the pain-in-the-ass pan and cover my driveway in Mercon V? And where did I put my grenades?

Thanks.

could be direct or intermediate clutch(diode)

I know about the possible diode cause; and I'm hoping that's not the trouble. Then, I 'd have to buy a new tranny (which sucks).

I replaced the MLPS recently. I used a VatoZone one. I'll check that Friday.

meh, you dont need em. You can make it through the traps in 2nd I believe.

Yep, it is. OWC, (One Way Clutch) is toast.

The fluid change is probably what did it to you sad to say. Time for a rebuild or one from a yard.

The same thing happened to me on while on the highway, but my transmission is from a 2001 Mustang which has the newer OWC.

The MLPS ended up being the culprit.

You said you replaced yours recently; wouldn't it still be under some kind of warranty? I suggest you take it back to the store for another one, just to make sure it's not what's troubling you. It'll be a lot cheaper than another transmission.

happened to me, i would up having over heated previously, and it weakened the 3/4 bands, and they finally gave up the ghost.
