Looking to purchase first Lincoln

Hey everyone!

I'm a college student looking to purchase his first Lincoln. I drove a 01 Monte Carlo LS, but an old lady hit it over Spring Break and it's totaled, so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'm looking at the LS because I'd like to step into the luxury car scene, I'll be graduating and want to step into adulthood with a vehicle that reflects where I'm headed.

I've found a 2000 LS V6 with 150k here locally. I wanted to get the advice and thoughts of those before me to help me make a decision on whether to buy it or not. What are the problems that have come up or that I should look out for?

That is probably the worst choice of LS, and least desirable. I am going to guess, being a college student, that money is tight. You may want something a little less "complex" for the time being, then you can step into a Gen2 V8 once you are established with your degree. :cool:
 
Any vehicle that has 150K on it will need work done. The "common problem list" occurs way before 150K miles... Many times people with 40k-60K on it deal with these issues.

DCCV
Degas bottle
Valve cover gaskets
COPs
Sway bar bushings
Hub bearings
And more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Some people on here have about 200K on their LS so it just depends on how the previous owner took care of it. I would assume they don't want much more than $2000.00-$2500.00 for this LS based upon age and mileage. So that should leave room for you to make repairs.

The one I was looking at wanted $4,000 for his. He said he's had all the valve covers, egr, and all the recall stuff, including transmission stuff, all fixed. I'm just not too familiar with the 5 speed automatic that is in it. At least not in the 2000, I drove a 2001 and 2003 and both were awesome. Unless D5 on the 2000 is the regular drive, did I miss something?
 
Yeah way too much.

You can find an 03-04 for around $5-6K in this area.

Must be nice here in Vegas 03-04's go for anywhere between 9-12k. My uncle works at Lincoln here & they move the LS as soon as they hit the lot.

It depends.

Right now they are expensive but a couple weeks ago there were some really good deals like a fully loaded black om black 05 lse for 11K.

When did they start putting pedal adjustment in there? I don't recall it in the 2000.

The one here needs the wheel bearing replaced.. I called the dealership and they said it'd be best to do both sides and they usually have to replace the "knuckle." They said it'd be 900 each side.. Any truth to that or was the guy on the phone drunk? hahaha
 
And what's up with the 2000 5 speed? Is it select shift or can I just put it in D5 and drive like a fully automatic?
 
A 2000 5 speed is a manual transmission.

SST is where you have the option of 4 or 5 speed auto or 4 speed manual up and down shift without a clutch.
 
Hmmmm, there was no clutch what so ever, lol... But it had D5 D4 3 2 1.. It was the most confusing thing ever.

D4 is what i always drive in and D5 is supposed to be for highway. The owners manual explains it.

If you can shift to the right and theres a + and a - it has the SST shifter.
 
I drove a 2003 today and it only had D5 D4 then + - to the right.. It as the smoooooooothest thing ever! I left it in D5 and was cruisin!

Nope, there wasn't a + or - in that one.. It just had D5 D4 3 2 1..


I really like it, but it'll need some wheel bearing and ABS sensor work on the front passenger side... And from what the others are saying (and the dealerships), I may have problems down the road with 150k. :(

Not exactly......

Select Shift Transmission is just a different way to select which gear you want. All gears are available in either mode.

I thought the first gen's couldn't start in first with SST from a dead stop?

I think you can if you nearly floor it (60% throttle or something like that).

2nd gen can without any tricks.
