Left front end squeaking

I've read threads about squeaking front ends that are caused by a number of things. My mechanic thinks its the ball joints, but not sure, and says it could be one of many things. Can anything be lubed up first to help limit the possibilities before spending a bunch of money?

My 2001

had the same prob I had the bolt keep comming loose on my Control Arm. Have to replace it and the Lower Ball Joints. Ford $1300 - $1400
