Just had the original motor replaced in my 2000 LS V8 with a 2002 engine. Having a few problems, just got it back from mechanic and theres some bugs to work out. I was checking the codes, found a couple of hoses not connected. I erased the codes and drove the car about two miles, came back and turned the engine off, went to restart it and it will not crank? No noise, no click, no nothing! Up until that point I had started the car numerous times with no issue whatsoever. It's not the battery, was wondering if the security thing was not recognizing the key? If so, is the a way to reset it???

I'm not taking it back to him, hindsight being 20/20 I would'nt have taken it to him. How can I reset or fix the key situation, does it sound like that could be the problem?

If the key worked once, it'll work again unless the computer (I think it's the gauge cluster that control this part...) had that key wiped. Which really shouldn't happen that quickly. The PATS light should tell you if it's a key problem. See if it blinks a code at you, then post that code. Joe's really nice about looking those up.

Check the cabling to the starter. If it's loose, this could happen. Could also short to the block and cause some really awesome problems.

the PATS light should be lighting up solidly while turning the key, if it blinks then it is a problem with the PATS system

To add to the previous reply, also check the ground strap from the engine to the body.

Is it supposed to stay solid with key on or just while cranking it? I'll check it out when I get home. I really appreciate you guys trying to help!!!

Just while cranking it. If you just turn the key to run without starting it, I think the light comes on solid for a few seconds and then goes off. While the engine is running (if you could get to that point) it should be off.

Do you have a voltmeter? There are some measurements that you could do to narrow things down.

Yes, I do.

There are three terminals on the back of the solenoid assembly on the side of the starter motor. The one closest to the starter motor is the "M" terminal. It connects to the starter motor. The middle one is the "S" terminal. It's driven by the starter relay. The last one is the "B" terminal. It's connected to the battery and the alternator.

Measure between ground (some good bare metal on the car body) and the B terminal. It should be 12.6 volts. If it is, have someone turn the key to start and see if it remains at or near 12.6 volts. If it is zero or very low in either case, then the cable to the battery is bad or there is a loose connection somewhere.

Measure between ground and the "S" terminal while someone holds the key in the start position. It should be over 12.0 volts. If it is very low then you have bad wiring, loose connection, bad relay, blown fuse, or PATS/PCM/Key issues.

If the "S" and "B" terminals had 12V, then measure the "M" terminal while someone holds the key in the start position. It should be 12 or so volts. If not, then the solenoid on the starter is bad and the whole starter assembly will have to be replaced.

If the "S", "B", and "M" terminals all had 12 volts, then measure between the same ground you used before and the bare metal of the starter motor while someone holds the key in the start position. If you get more than 0.5 volts, then the ground strap between the engine and the body is missing, loose, or bad. Otherwise, the starter is bad.

I really appreciate everyones help on this issue! I found out why it would'nt start. I was messing with it, and noticed the transmission indicator light on the dash was showing R instead of P, I pulled it back into neutral and it started right up.Would the transmission speed sensor circuit problems I'm having 0715 ,0720 contribute to this?

No, it sounds like the transmission linkage is not correctly adjusted or connected.

+1

good one Joe. I agree. The mechanic did not finish the job. DIY finish the job yourself, make it right.
