So...... My procedure for releasing the fuel pressure to change the fuel filter is to give a good whack to the inertia switch, tripping said switch. As is my habit I broke out my rubber mallet and gave a good whack to the switch. Imaginge my surprise when the engine kept running. I figured I needed more direct contact and removed the trim panel and whacked the switch a little harder. The engine stumbled a little, caught itself and kept on running. From this I must deduce that the switch has failed. I ordered a new one from Tasca and should have it in the not too distant future. I still got the filter changed, though my garage smells like gas from all that poured out.

You may want to check your inertia switch!

Ehh, removed that relay and my engine just wouldn't die. It started missing (got a few codes for that) but it just would not die. Had to pull the fuel pump fuse, and then it died in a matter of a few seconds.

That's interesting. I wonder if it could be a REM fault? I've never done this myself. I don't like making the engine run lean, and I find that putting a rag over the connection before I pull it apart works well enough.

+1 on putting a rag over the connection. I've heard of people releasing the pressure at the schraeder valve, though I've never done it that way.

Are you saying that the button didn't pop up? If it did, then the switch is defective. If it didn't, then maybe you didn't hit it hard enough. Either way, it is easier to just pull the fuel pump relay. (That inertia switch was only designed for two or three hits anyway.)

Yup, the button didn't pop. I hit it so hard I thought it would break; MUCH harder than I have hit it in the past (not this switch but the other cars).
