everytime i start my 03 lincoln ls v8 i hear like a power steering whine but its excessively loud. i say power steering because when i turn the steering wheel left or right the noise gets increasingly louder. like a high pitched whine. read on here that it could b my ball joint or rack and pinion. i will b posting the noise on youtube later on tonight if any of you can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.

Well, sure sounds like it is probably the power steering pump. Ford has for a long time used power steering that has a noticeable sound. I've seen it on vehicles from about 1987 - 1995 vehicles. My LS doesn't have any sound. So, maybe you are low on steering fluid indicating a leak somewhere, or the pump is on the way out. Ball joints don't make a "whine" the make a "creak". Rack and pinion? Maybe. But I bet pump. Anyone else?

my car startred doing that shortly after i bought it (about 2 years) but ive neveer looked into it. all my fluids are full and it stops when i am driving so im not to concerned about it, definatley let us know if you get it fixed though.

Does it only whine when you turn the wheel, and is it noticeable at lower speeds especially?
I think some people on the forum here have added an anti-friction additive to the power steering fluid to reduce or eliminate that noise. Mine was making this noise under warranty and they replaced the steering rack, no more whine. I read about one other guy who did a rack replacement for this whine too.

The friction modifier is what I did to quiet the squeal I heard at low speed parking on the inside of the car. That eventually went away, but I too had the whiny power steering pump or rack in my 03. I just dealt with it by turning the stereo up. :D

how long is the warranty anyway? i bought mine second hand it now has 74k miles and its an 03, pretty sure it expired right

That sounds like low fluid to me. Have you checked it? Could also be burnt fluid. I'd try getting all the old fluid out and replacing it with new stuff.

How's the K&N treatin' ya?

k & n makes the engine sound so sweet. it pretty much roars so loud that the ricers take there primed junk civics back into whatever hole they crawled out of. i might just chop of the magnaflows and straight pipe it. i dont know lol what do you think? throttle response def improved some, did the sct flash do anythin for the throttle response/ rev limiter>?

Ouch! Yeah you have air in your power steering system. Maybe a leak some were.
About the exhaust. I'm straight pipein. I got the magniflow cat back, but it wasn't loud enough. I started playin with my factory exhaust and ended up cutting off those huge mufflers, welding 18" resinators and 10" tips on both sides. Still runs soild and there is a definite power increase. I but on the other exhaust for CA smog
PS
The only black stuff accumulating on my bumper is rubber.

mine isnt that bad. I only hear mine inside the car when i turn my wheel i cant hear it outside the car well maybe just a little but you can tell its comeing from inside idk what it is ice gotten checkd out and they say its nothing they can fig out let me know too if you din something out

As the guys mentioned above, it does sound like its low on fluid. Have you checked the fluid level?

BTW, you should post some pics of your LS. Hard to see what it looks like in your sig, but you got a good lookin car there.

Pump noise

When the pump is going bad it will make a whining noise. It comes and goes. Sometimes you start driving and nothing, then you will get a little whine and it changes as you go up and down hills. then again, are you sure your serpentine belt isn't slipping? When was the last time you replaced it.

It's gotta be the pump. You can hear the gears grinding.

k well i added some steering fluid as it was low, i guess indicating a leak somewhere, im going to have it checked soon and either replace the pump and hoses. im not sure when the serp belt was changed but im probably going to change it before 75k which is right around the corner. im going to get the tranny flushed tommorow along with an oil change and a rad flush, diff, fuel system and fuel filter. any recommendations on the tranny flush? the place im going to is pretty good but im kinda worried since i heard stories about people filling the tranny fluid too low and messing up the tranny. im told a little over 11.5 is what it takes.

So what he is saying is that the power steering pump on the LS will make this noise even in straight lines? Like even if you are not turning the wheel?

All the cars I had only did it when the wheel was being turned.
