I have read about the TSB for the squeaky steering system. I have also heard that there is an additive that they use to repair the issue. Has anyone done the repair themselves? I would like to do it but I would like some suggestions...

Thank you in advance

Got an '03, mine started squeaking shortly after I bought it with only 14,000 miles. The TSB states to use the additive but also replace the whole rack-and-pinion itself. Mine was replaced and I have never had anymore problems.

Replacing it yourself could be difficult but if you know what you are doing it might be a fun task. I would just have it replaced though since its free.

What year do you have, warranty still?

The rack shouldn't be that hard to replace on your own. Its actually in a pretty accessible area under the car.
Just measure the exact length of each tie rod before you take it apart so you can get your alignment close enough to be able to drive the car to the shop to get it aligned once its put back together.

It is a 2003-2004 model years TSB and it is an additive that is performed at the dealership.

lol.....mine started squeaking with 2000km on the clock.....they added the additive, lasted 20,000km.......did it again it lasted another 20.....finally got a new rack its quiet and smooth and tight as a virgin again :p

I tried the fix myself according to the TSB (e.g., the TSB that applies to the 2003 LS). Basically, go to any Ford or Lincoln/Mercury Dealer and get a small bottle of the friction modifier. It costs about $5. Remove whatever volume they say (I think its 100 ml) with a turkey baster, and replace that volume with the friction modifier (I believe they say to use a 50/50 mix of modifier and power steering fluid). Run the car and turn the steering all the way to the left and right a few times, and this should help.
