Republican Voter Registration Chief Arrested for Fraud in California

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/1...registration-chief-arrested-fraud-california/

The head of a voter registration group hired by the California Republican Party was arrested over the weekend for allegedly lying about his address in the state in order to vote illegally, the office of California's secretary of state announced Sunday.

Mark Anthony Jacoby, the owner of a signature-gathering firm called Young Political Majors, was taken into custody by Ontario police just after midnight Saturday and booked with a felony punishable by up to three years in prison.

Jacoby allegedly registered himself at his childhood home in Los Angeles, even though he no longer lives there. It is voter fraud to register if ineligible and perjury to provide false information on a voter registration card. Jacoby was charged with two counts of each relating to his 2006 and 2007 registration.

"Voter registration fraud is a serious issue, which is why I vigorously investigate all allegations of elections fraud," said Bowen, California's chief elections officer. "Where there's a case to be made, I will forward it to law enforcement for criminal prosecution."

An arraignment date has not been scheduled yet. Bail was set at $50,000.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Jacoby's firm was paid $7 to $12 by the CRP for each GOP voter registration signature, but dozens of voters who signed on said they were duped into registering as Republicans and thought they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters.

The CRP called the arrest "politically motivated."

"The fact that these charges are being leveled against an individual operating in a highly-contested area of California, and the significant gap between recent allegations and the charges we've seen today suggests that this is politically motivated," reads a statement by the party.

It also claims Bowen, a recipient of donations from the embattled ACORN voter registration group, is trying to "achieve maximum political benefit and deflect attention from the Democratic presidential nominee's high-profiled problems and associations with the radical community activist group ACORN.

"While we condemn voter fraud in all forms, it is evident that Debra Bowen is using her office to play politics with the public's perception of political parties. This is inappropriate at least, and an abuse of her office and a willing suspension of her duties at worst," the statement reads.

Hmmm, ACORN gets lambasted because some of their employees committed fraud against their employer by turning in false voter registration forms, which ACORN routinely flags as suspect before turning into the election officials, which they are required by law in most states to turn in ALL forms they receive to election officials false or not......... and ACORN gets all the headlines while outright intentional fraud (paying for GOP-specific registrations) gets no attention at all?? And on top of that the CRP "claims to be against "voter fraud in all forms" (despite paying specifically for GOP registrations) and attacks the whistle-blower when she does her job?

A guy registered to vote at his child hood home, not in multiple places.
And he had some real people register to vote, just to make a few bucks. Any kind of fraud undermines the system and needs to be prosecuted. We also need to end these attempts by ACORN to make registration so ridiculous "easy" and disorganized.

But, be serious, are you trying to draw some moral equivalence here? By finding this one story, are you now trying to dismiss the rampant ACORN violations?

Is this group responsible for hundreds of thousands of fraudulent registrations, paying people to both register AND to vote, and did the McCain campaign pay them nearly a million dollars for their "get out the vote" campaign??

The guy was registering REAL people, but it sounds like he was misleading them in order to get them to register as Republicans, rather than Democrat or Independent. It's not even the same charge that ACORN is facing around the country.

It really does seem evident that the Democrat Chief of Elections, Secretary of the State Debrah Bowen (who receives money from ACORN), is doing this for political reasons. She's doing the same thing Johnny is trying to do, deflect attention from ACORN by presenting this story as some kind of moral equivalent. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

It seems all the left has is the whole argument of "well your guy is corrupt also'...they cannot defend their guy's actions, that much is clear. Only obfuscate the issue and try to draw attention away from their guy.

Isn't that exactly what you are attempting to do now?

Every election cycle we hear the same rhetoric from the gOp: Widespread Voter Fraud!! Millions of FALSE VOTES spells The end of DEMOCRACY!! Head for the BOMB SHELTERS!! When the FACTS are that this is a minor issue:

How Common Is Fraud?

Election fraud does exist, but hasn't been shown to be widespread. The New York Times reported in 2007 that a five-year crackdown on such fraud by the Bush administration's Justice Department had produced 70 convictions at the federal level, including 40 campaign workers or government workers convicted of vote-buying, intimidation or ballot forgery, and 23 cases of multiple voting or voting by ineligible voters. But the Times described these as unconnected incidents and said the Justice Department had turned up no evidence of "any organized effort to skew federal elections."

Bush administration officials have pushed hard to find such evidence, too hard in one case, according to an investigation by the Department of Justice's internal watchdogs, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR). Their report into the firing of nine United States attorneys concluded that the "real reason" for the firing of New Mexico's U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was "complaints about Iglesias’s handling of voter fraud and public corruption matters." The complaints included gripes by state Republican Party officials who believed that widespread fraud by Democrats had prevented George Bush from winning the state in the 2000 presidential election. Iglesias launched a task force that worked with the FBI but found that "there was insufficient evidence in any of the cases the Task Force reviewed to support criminal prosecution by the [U.S. Attorney's Office] or state authorities," according to the report of the OIG and OPR. These included cases involving ACORN workers. Republicans charged that Iglesias was showing insufficient rigor in prosecuting the cases.

Just more smoke and mirrors from the gOp.

That's geat, I'm glad he was busted. Anyone caught doing this should be tossed in the can. Now Johnny, let me hear you say the same about those corrupt ACORN Democrats.

Why are you quoting from FACTCHECK.org as though it's a source that should be considered credible? In this election cycle in particular, FactCheck has been guilty of repeatedly misrepresenting information, posting incorrect information, and frequently having to ammend their answers.

Why don't you just quote from the "Stop the Smears" website next? Those guys keep updating their answers on a weekly basis as well. It's hard to keep track of Obama's lies.

No, we never hear about the "end of Democracy."
But you will hear about the pending end of free market capitalism.

Despite all your links, nothing you've posted refutes ANY of the charges made against ACORN. They attempt to dismiss it, understate it, or parse words look for some technical reason why "it's not that bad." But it fails.

Another cheap trick is to pretend that the ACORN fraud is just small isolated thing. As though it's just happening in some cities. Or just Illinois. Or just Missouri.. Or then, just the states the have seen indictments. Or then just the states where ACORN is being investigated. Because it's in every city, every state, that ACORN operates. AND- ACORN isn't the only "non-partisan" Democrat organization involved in it.

Frankly, the DNC itself is involved in a system of undermining our election system. One example is how they pass increasingly ridiculous legislation designed to make fraud like this so easy to perpetrate and difficult to investigate. Other examples are how they block even the most reasonable legislation designed to reduce vote fraud, like simply providing a photo ID at the polling location to confirm your identity. And after that, they also aggressively support legislation that would expand voting to NON citizens, all felons, and people who don't even have the interest to register to vote.

And you're willingness to accept it, and the perpetual efforts of the Democrat party to engage in mass voter fraud is disgusting.

If nothing else, you should be disgusted by this.
And it's not UNDERSTATED. If you do any research on this subject, you'll find that actual voter fraud (not just registration fraud) is RAMPANT inside the strongest Democrat districts in the country. Places like Philadelphia, Miami, Detroit, Chicago.

It's only that just now, Republicans have finally begun to act in defense of our voting rights. In 2004, there was widespread voter fraud in the cities, yet liberal kooks ignored this and instead decided to use misdirection from their own actions and pretend that there was some Diebold conspiracy.

It's interesting, almost every time the Democrat accuse the Republicans of something, it turns out the Republicans aren't organized enough to have done it and that the Democrats have been doing it for the past few decades. Always projecting...

Skeeter reminds me of the SNL skit from yesteryear with Dan Aykroyd teaching the new Customs agent how to catch people smuggling in drugs. They caught this dude with a joint in his pocket while letting John Belushi walk through with suitcases of cocaine spilling out of them.
