I have a 2000 CONTINENTAL and the button for the gas filler door has come off. I now have to open the filler door by opening the trunk and pulling on the cable, which is a real pain. I can't tell by looking in the hole, but do I have to replace the whole mechanism? If so, if it is inexpensive enough, and easy enough, can I just buy the part at my dealer or (?), and put it in myself? I am so happy with my Continental. I've had it since 2002, with 22,000 miles and it was used as an exec car at Universal Studios. It now has 117,000 miles on it, and after a 100,000 tuneup etc it is as good as ever. I am a retired veteran, so am on a fixed income, so would appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thank you very much.

It's just a momentary push button with two wires. I don't know what it costs at the dealer but it should be very easy to swap. If you can fish the broken one out through the hole you won't even have to remove the door panel but I'd never be so lucky!
