My friend's 93 Mark VIII needs a new LH front cat, what are his options? I know it's attached to the manifold. Remember he has to pass CA smog...

Bummer, that thing is ONE HELLA EXPENSIVE item to replace.

doubtful and aftermarket high flow would be "up to the task" and doubtful it'd pass CA smogsn00ps.

OEM replacement would probably be the only option, keeping in mind that even IF it's available that one side will cost "close to what the car is worth".

I believe the kooks headers are 50 state legal, so as long as you also went with 50 state legal aftermarket cats, you would be fine. Another option is modify the steering shaft and use cobra manifolds and cats. Still another option is you actually can cut the cat off and weld a new one on, since that manifold is not cast iron. I don't know if you'll be able to find a shop that will do that for you though.

I'd take it to a reputable exhaust shop that knows CA laws and have them cut off and weld on a new cat... it should be plenty legal.

If all he needs is to pass the smog one time. Buy some gas treatment it works. otherwise that sucks

Yeah, the guys who did my exhaust had to cut out both cats. Welded the new ones in further down stream, much cheaper than oem replacement. Good luck in CA, in RI its a little different, especially on older cars. :)
