Well I got to do my driver side vcg along with coils and plugs. When pulling the old coils there was alot of oil at the bottom of the boot along with this goldish brown sludge. As I removed the valve cover I noticed the inside of the cover had a coating of the same substance. In fact I found that the valve cover breather tube coming off the intake had the same kind of coating. Inside the engine looks clean as a whistle though. What is it? I also see that the plugs have probably never been changed in the cars life as they seem to be worn down to the point where I can stick a popsicle stick in the gap.

Sounds like varnish to me, which would be cooked out of the engine oil you found. Nothing to worry about, just clean it up and replace the valve cover gaskets.
