Just finished a front end suspension rebuild on my 01 V6 Sport, including new upper control arms and new Ford OEM sport shocks. I have to say though, that the original shocks were in really good shape, even after 10 years and 115k miles - There was still decent damping left and no leaks from either one.
I think this is a combination of a well built OE shock, plus the life of the internal valves and seals probably benefits from the VERY short suspension travel on these cars - the damper piston only has three or four inches of movement ....!
Definate improvement with the new shocks though, especially the fine/secondary ride control.
