I just bought a 2000 LS8. So far im loving it, but i came across my first problem. Intermittently, mainly in reverse, but also drive occasionally, It seems as though the trans locks up for a short second.

So ill put it in gear and start to drive, then it will lock up so the car jerks to a stop and then its fine again. Ive noticed it happen only once everytime i drive the car. And when it locks up, its only for a half second.

Does anybody have any ideas of what may cause this to happen?

Likely the line pressure relief valve in the pump. 5r55n's (as well as s and w's, to a lesser extent) have some quirks. Appears these trannies have a few problem design spots (like the rest of the car!) and are very sensitive to how they are assembled.
Could very likely shorten the life of the tranny. Find a shop you can trust and ask their opinion. Try to find someone that's familiar with the 5r55's. The mustangs use the s (or w? can't remember), so lots of shops should have some concept.

Unfortunately, getting to the pump requires the tranny to be removed, so it's not an easy or cheap job. Hopefully you can find someone willing to just look at the pump for a reasonably small cost. Check out this page, particularly the relief valve.

i talked to a trans guy i know. he said a spring in the valve body is most likely worn down... i guess its a common prob with this trans.. nebody else have this problem?

Nope. Thank God. I only have some slight shuddering under certian conditions. 02LS8 112K.
