Now, it's nothing like Geno's PC build but it's an upgrade for me.

Old Machine Specs:

Intel D875PBZ Motherboard
Intel P4 3.4GHz HT
4 Gb's Ram DDR 400Mhz
ATI Radeon X700 PRO AGP 256Mb
Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS
Windows7 Pro 32-bit

New Machine Specs:

Asus M4A785-M Motherboard
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core 2.5GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Fan
2 Gb DDR2 800Mhz G.skill Ram
Graphics and Sound onboard
Windows7 Pro 32-bit

Like I said, it's not like Geno's Machine but I still have room for some upgrades, better processor and memory later. Then I'll move to 64-bit.
For $230 it was a much needed upgrade. Even with half the ram, the thing moves twice as fast and runs a hell of a lot cooler.

Best description I have for my old build was dropping a small four-banger in my Mark VIII, yeah it will get to where you want to go but it's going to be revving high getting you there. The new build is like having a V8 in a Ford Festiva, there's not such thing as too much horsepower.

Overclocked the CPU last night from 2.5Ghz to 2.94Ghz, if I pushed it much further it became unstable, I'll play with the settings a little more later but I'm happy for now. It didn't add much heat to the processor either!

lol my desktop is a p4 3.06ghz i got it over clocked to 5.04ghz ill find the picture i took. that was like 4 months ago and its still going strong! i just have it sitting near the a/c vent.. and a fan blowing on it.. once and a while i can cook bacon on it too! lol

Like I said, I don't need what Geno has, i just needed an upgrade. Added an Nvidia 9500GT 1Gb today. Frees up all the system memory for the OS now.

I'm hoping you chose to install 64 bit Win7 to begin with. A 32 bit OS can only see 4 GB of total memory, which includes the dedicated video memory. Installing a 1GB video card will essentially rob your system of 1GB RAM.

You definitely need the 64 bit OS.

I'm only running 2Gb's of memory total right now, so I have no need for a 64 bit OS and windows 7 64-bit suggests a minimum of 2Gb of memory so I chose 32-bit for the moment, I have a copy of 64-bit when it comes time to upgrade. As for the memory of the video card, if I were to allocate 1Gb to my onboard video then I would only have 1Gb left for the system. By adding a video card with 1Gb onboard, I keep my 2Gb for the system and the video card handles itself.

Frog, as for the real OS. I'm a techie, I've run Linux and OS X, while they have their place and both use less overhead than a windows OS. I still cannot find all of the applications that I choose to run for either, which is why I stick with Windows. I'm not a huge supporter of Microsnot but it is still the most widely used OS. Linux is gaining ground and if Apple would lower their prices they too would become a serious competitor in the market. I get my Windows installations for free, and yes they are legal copies, so I'm happy with what I have for now. You just can't beat free! Well maybe free and a BJ!

OK you're good. I hope you are happy with your new system. It sounds like a good one to me.
