engine surging at idle?

On my way home from work the other night, i'm just started the car about not even 5 min and was stopped at a red light and the engine was revving a little faster than idle and then comming back down to idle speed, but with my foot on the break i was able to feel the car lunging forward. as the light turned green i gave it a little gas and it hasn't done it since. is this just a coincidence or is something on its way out? FYI 37,000 miles on the car.

The IAC controls idle when the throttle body is closed. IAC = Idle COntrol Valve.

It may be on its way out. Year?

On the bright side its a 2nd gen so the iac is very easy to change.

thanks for the help guys, it hasn't done it since yesterday and yes unity its a 98 Gen II. i changed the air filter anyway for good measure. could it also possibly be a clogged fuel filter or bad maf? havent had a chance to look but would it be worth considering? Normally dont take the car to work, baby it to death, only on weekends...don't be so jealous guys, its got its blemishes...some jerk kids on my block put a nice scratch on my driver door and dented my rear quater panel on the passenger side...(would've murdered them if i saw em) planning on getting it fixed cuz i love this car, when i get some dough together i plan on makin this car a classy cruiser like mschultz...gotta lotta respect for the man to put so much effort into our type of car...just goes to show you the potential this car has if lincoln had some initiative to make these models again.
