So I have been having a bit of trouble with my cooling. Ever since I got it out this spring it had been overheating. So I decided to change the thermostat just to make sure that wasnt the problem. Thermostat is changed and I am still having issues.

First off I cant get the crossover cap off so I filled it from the hoses to the heater core I believe, to try and get most of the air out but I dont know how well this works.

As I am currently overheating a bit idk what to do, so I will just give a list of things i have noticed.

1. Car is fine as long as you stay around 30 mph
2. 60mph the cars starts to heat up really fast
3. I can smell coolent but have no idea where. Its not comming out burp tank like it has in the past and its still full

So idk if I just got a bad thermostat or have a bubble in the coolent or even something worse (hope not).

I plan on welding a nut to the crossover cap so I can get it out of there as soon as I can dig my dads welder out of his garage. Just looking for some ideas right now because im out of them. Im about ready to break down and just take it to a dealership to get fixed.

No need to werld a nut just take a grinder and "notch" it then take a flathead screwdriver and genty "tap" it off with a hammer. Burp the system completely that should help and or fix the problem.

I would also check the sender for the gauge. If the gauge lead is shorted to ground it will read full hot.

The single wire sender for the gauge will do nothing for a check engine light - however the two wire sensor will trip the check engine light since it sends the signal to the computer.

read my thread about troubles. (crossover on first page) Looking through past threads the fluid coming out of the overflow tank is not a pleasant sight as it's indicative of worse things. If your needle goes up then down then up etc. then it's probably a air bubble. If it goes up and stays up then thermistat was the right way to go. After that I'd look at water pump and radiator clog. Once you take off the crossover look to see if the fluid is moving in the tube before you fill it. To fill it go to oreilly's and get the small funnel. (it's about 6" in diameter with a 2" nipple on the bottom) cut the nipple about halfway up. This allows you to literally screw the funnel into the crossover so you can fill it and let it sit while the car runs. It's the only way to go when burping. Also, when burping. Burp for 30 minutes. Check the hoses at the top and bottom of the radiator to make sure they are hot. If the hoses on the bottom of the radiator are not hot afterwards this also indicates a clogged radiator. (just so you know... not to worry you but overheating while radiator fluid is coming out of the overflow tank is indicative to a headgasket blown. Not saying it is. Just a common symptom of that issue.)

What really worries me is smelling the coolant. You wouldn't be able to smell coolant coming out of your overflow tank unless it was getting all over the engine and burning off. Hopefully that's the case. I did what you did and filled through the heater core tubes and cracked the tube going to my heater core so now it's bypassed.

Also, turn your AC on max and see if your fan is working. If it doesn't come on with your AC on high then your fan is the issue. (though the opposite would happen. you would overheat sitting still and be fine while driving)

about that.... It came back last night....This time I was driving for 20 min. and it started over heating

True... my fans won't kick on unless I'm around town...

Are you sure you are burping it right, can you get the crossover cap off?

No im not sure, lol I thought I had it last time but I guess not. But whats getting me is that it doesnt show up right away. When it starts happening is after the car has been warm for at least 5 miles

can you still smell coolant? wondering if the heater core is leaking since it was filled that way. it doesnt take much to crack the soldered joints on the heater core. and spots of coolant?

No i havent smelled any coolent, not as bad anyway. Nor have i noticed any coolent leaking down the passenger side.

You need to replace the crossover or get the cap off... I will bet $50 it isn't burped, and if you keep driving it you will toast the head gaskets....

HAHAHAHAHAHA.... I have to work tomorrow... sorry, if I didn't I would drive down.

Well if you pay me $120+gas+dinner I'll do it.

I gotta head halfway across Iowa tomorrow and didnt really want to take the truck but looks like thats gonna have to happen. As soon as I find some time I'll try my hand at burping it again

I'm fairly sure that the car is punishing me for parking it all winter...

they do that, my rr wheel speed sensor screamed a big ole FU after i got it back on the road, now its ok though *knocks on desk*

Yea...mine ate the Strut Rod Bushings.
Must have been hungry over the winter.
I don't think the rattle will go away.
