Hi all. my car is still giving me a hard time. 2002 3.9 150,000 miles. i had a misfire code. put new coils and plugs. no more misfire code. now 2 more codes. the car has always had to crank for around 10 sec before it fired. i was thinking it was injectors because when it finely fires it gets a puff of smoke out the pipes and smells strong like fuel. the CEL is not on. my moms car is running like crap and i tried scanning it and got nothing. and it was saying no monitors were ready. so just to check the scanner i plugged it in to the LS and it puled 2 codes p0320 and p0340. and just to be clear the CEL is not on. a search of the ls section pulled up a list of codes and this is what i got for the 2 codes.
P0320 Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
can this just be a bad sensor or can a loose cam chain throw these codes? on top of being hard to start if you punch it she craps out / sputters for a second and then cleans up and pulls hard. and some times sitting at a light it will stumble for a second and the idle fine. thanks for any help you can give.

I'm not going to be of a whole lot of help with this but it is something to think about...

At about your same mileage my 2000 V8 had a mis-fire code for #7 cylinder, rough idle and an o2 on the front left bank code... replacing the coil did nothing for the rough idle and the cam chain knock/slap was still present so I pulled the drivers side valve cover to fing I had jumped one tooth on the exhaust cam. Replaced tensioner, set timing back to stock and it runs fine. Cleared the codes by removing the batt terminal for about 10 minutes.

Whats the status of your tensioners?

don't know the plug holes were not full of oil so i didn't pull the valve covers. the car idles smooth its just ever now and then it will stumble. you can go days with out this happening. and when it happens its only for a split second. so it will be idling fine then its like it doesn't fire for a split second and then back to a smooth idle. if you stab the throttle of idle it will almost always stumble for a second and then clean up and run strong, pulls hard doesn't miss a beat through the rest of the R's or through the gears.

Hmm, Odd there is no current codes. I guess it could pop back up in a few cycles...

I had a bad mass air flow (weak) do just about that on a Buick Grand National a few years back. But then again I guess a o2 could make it act the same if your into just throwing parts, time and money into it just for fun.

Coils (As we all should know by now) are high on my suspect list with anything misfire, stumble related...

Good luck and for God's Sake please return to finish telling the tale!

I love searching for something and reading it thru to the conclusion... even if its a 5 yr old thread the parts didnt change.

Thanks
