Choosing an Amp

I got my subwoofers installed a couple months ago, and since day one they have been crap. I do believe its the amp though. What makes me think this?

1. The Amp gets so hot, I could probably fry an egg on it
2. Constant protection light, Maybe can have it beat for 15 minutes before it shuts off
3. A buddy of mine has the same Sub's and a different amp and they sound clean.

I'm debating whether I should just sell the amp and speakers or just purchase a better amp. I know that none of the above are "high end" components but they should sound better then they do.

I need some suggestions for a better amp (New). It doesn't have to be this years model or anything like that, just reliable. I would like to stay in the 300$-350$ range.

how are your subs wired?
series for an 8 ohm load?
or parallel for a 2 ohm load?

if they're in parallel and down to 2 ohms, that amp should have enough power to run them fine.
or that amp is just junk. idk.

I'll add to what Chris mentioned.

What are the settings on your amp set at?
What gauge power wire are you running?
What head unit?

That's a decent entry level starter system. Perhaps you're clipping the sh!t out of them. The same setup in 1 car will not sound them same in a diff car.
