check engine light conti

i have a 1997 lincoln conti , i went to have emission test done , first i had replaced the battery and only drove car 8 miles and the auto shop said you have to drive car 30-40 miles to activate monitors? which i did then the check engine light came on after that. and they will not run emissions test with check engine light on. what now? please help i amtrying to get licence plates for car.

You need to go through a certain amount of drive time before you can run a check on the stored codes... now that you have a CEL you should have past that point and should get the codes read and report back to us so we can help you.
