Center Console interchangability (Gen 1 and Gen 2)

Is it possible to put a 2nd gen center console into a 1st gen?

What would be invoved? Would you have to change the shifter? what about swapping out the dash cover?

You would sorta have to swap the entire dash out. At first they look like they may fit, but where the dash and console meet things get ugly. Myself and a few other have asked before.

I have removed the dash before, more or less (blend door went out on my 1996). Could you just replace the dash cover, then swap out the consoles? Keep the Gen 1 steering wheel and all the gen 1 electronics?

Would it be worth all that? The entire dash would have to come out to really replace it all. As much as I want a Gen II interior myself, I am not even sure I would go through all that!

Up to you man, but if you have the time its doable.

I am considering it. Would it be just a replacement of the dash cover? What about the message center controls?

Not sure about the controls. I dont think this will be a project you will get a lot of help with. If its been done I *think* it was done only once. You will be having to figure a lot of it out on your own.

Yeah, I kinda figure that. Still, there are a few people who have owned and/or worked on both generations and might be able to answer some questions about the differences...like the message center control thing. is the electrical connection the same? are they interchangable?
