There seems to be a continuing thread of concern regarding cat cons. I'll therefore relate some personal experience. Please accept this disclaimer when I state that I don't advocate that anyone actually break the law, no matter how massively stupid that law can be seen to be in the real world. I saw what I'm about to relate:

Vehicle in question a turbo 2.3 Mustang. Instead of replacing the cat con it was decided to remove the reactive monolith. It's ceramic honeycomb and the people involved simply turned it on end and with a piece of re-rod pounded through from end to end until the interior was broken up and knocked out. What was left was the SS shell. Ford's claim that the design was such that there was NO restriction with ceramic in place made it very likely that there was only a degree of improvement with it removed. The rest of the exhaust system was replaced with a straight section of pipe, ending in a Super Trapp muffler.

I've personally experienced a cat con stopping up. On a trip to Chicago from Detroit, the Escort began to lose power. Finally, it'd idle but had too little power to go down the highway. We unbolted it from the manifold and put a bunch of washers on the stud to keep it open. We proceeded with the (now noisey) trip and dealt with the cat con after the weekend.

Have fun!!
