Just had a check engine light come on. Code # P0420, "Cat effenciency below threshold." I have a 2000 V8 sport with 120000 miles. Do I need a new converter?

Anybody khow anything about how long these things last. What a fix might cost, or why the converter code is comining up, is it programed to do this at 120K?

I think that's the same code my LS with 110k miles threw. My buddy told me it basically means that the readings between the front and rear O2 sensors are too similar meaning that the cat is no longer doing it's job. I don't think it has anything to do with the mileage tripping it at a certain point...
Maybe somebody with a little more knowledge can respond

sh!t i got that message at 55k, except it was PO430, which is on the opposite side. i've posted about this before in several threads. i couldn't determine that the cat had actually failed so i just let it ride and eventually the CEL turned off. it just turned on a couple weeks ago again with the same error code. hey, as long as i pass smog check i don't care.

one suggestion that was offered was to swap the O2 sensors from the drivers side to the passenger side, wait for the CEL to come on, pull the code and see if the error message follows the sensor OR if it stays on the same side. that way you can determine more easily where the source of the problem is. i never did this but its a good idea.
