Car started in Safe Mode

Hey Guys, I started the car this morning and it started shaking pretty bad and went into that ETC Safe mode. It has gone into the safe mode twice before while driving but never on start up. I shut the car off. Let it sit for 30 seconds and started it back up and it was fine. I assume after reading alot of the threads on here that its the Coils but I figured I would ask. Should I just change the coils or should I look into something else? Also is there a good write up on here how to do it?
 
Check engine light??

Take it to autozone and see if theres any codes. Rough idle and shaking would be bad coils...i suggest you get the plugs changed out at the same time. Have the mechanic look for oil to make sure the valve cover gaskets are still good.
 
Ive heard with these cars that nothing comes up when running those test from autozone because the check engine lights just shuts off when you turn the car off. My car doesnt have the light on right now so I dont think it would any error codes would show up.
 
No I think most of the time the CEL does have to be on to pull a code. And almost the same thing happened to me, ended up being just one coil and plug and its been running perfect ever since. Motorcraft Coils blow arse! Buy some Granetelli coils and you'll only have to replace them once.
 
Is this something I can do myself or do I need to take it to a shop. Ive done all the work on my other cars and could probably figure it out if someone pointed me in the right direction.

It's almost certainly that you have one or more marginal COPs. Depending on when you bought your LS, you may still be under warranty. A call to the dealer with the VIN should be all that is required to find out. If you are not under warranty, the lowest cost solution is to replace all the COPs and plugs.

Yes, you can change the COPs and plugs yourself.
 
I just checked and it looks like Im not one of those lucking people that get it under warranty :(
 
You could try just changing out the spark plugs alone....mine were bad at only 65K miles.
 
Well it looks like this could be a little time consuming so Ill probably just do the plugs when i pull all the stuff off for the coils
 
sounds like coils to me, most likely either coil #3 or #4.

i just ordered a full set of cheapies from global automotive for $100 shipped, dealer wants $97 for one, if you want a set of OEM's, email maxx
