Last weekend the check engine light came on, took it to the dealer to have it read and it was a code P0420, bank 1 catalytic converter low efficiency. They ran all the pinpoint tests and said it may need a converter, but the CEL didn't come back right away so they said to drive it for a while. Code came back this weekend.
Here's the strange thing. Both times while the CEL has been on, the transmission has shifted better. I've always had the problem where if you slow down to about 10 mph and then try to accelerate the trans doesn't know what gear to use, you get a long hesitation then it drops into low of a gear and takes off like a scalded dog. Upshifts it seems like it slips intop neutral between 2nd and 3rd gear, the RPMS jump up about 1000rpm and then it thunks into gear. Both times when the CEL has been on, the transmission has shifted like a dream. Downshifts are quick and crisp, no hesitation between gears on upshifts, it's just perfect.
Anyone else seen anything like this?
