CAI Install Help

I am about to install a CAI using the Spectre 9705 (4") MAF adapter. I think this Spectre adapter is relativly new. Some parts stores don't even have it in their system yet. I found it at Auto Zone for about $30, special order. I am leaving the factory tube to the throttle body. I have a chrome pipe with a cone filter on the other side of the MAF adapter. My question is, will I get a CEL after the install? Should I disconnect the battery for 20 minutes after the install to "reset" the computer? The adapter includes a couple of sleeves to help "tuning" the adapter. Any help will be appreciated.
 
No cel due to the cone filter. I haven't used that one personally, but I'm pretty sure it's just like the kkm set up. I don't think you need to disconnect the battery, the pcm will adjust. I would clean the MAF sensor while you're in there too.

If you do get a CEL after installation, then do the battery disconnect re-set.
 
I didn't have to disconnect the battery. I used the Spectre Part#8145 ($15) Small Ford MAF Adapter using the stock MAF and stock intake tube.

Thanks for the info. It is a good idea about cleaning the MAF. I actually already have the spray from another car.
 
Isn't that a warm air intake without a shroud to keep it from sucking air under the hood?

Still a nice conversion :)
 
I agree, a warm air conversion. I wish someone made a shield for a Gen1. I live in the heat of Arizona, and have been kinda concerned about what I might be facing when the heat kicks in here in a week or two. I might have to go back to the stock air box...

You could fab one up easy enough with some aluminum sheet metal and a rubber tube as a hood seal. Not sure if you want to, but you could probably hammer one out (literally even) in a day. Already got that nice hole through the frame, just need to limit that cone's options on air path :)
 
Just make your own heat shield. Very simple to do
 
I normally use the lower part on the stock system. In most instances the lower part of the stock air box has a cold air source feeding it. I just make sure that I turn the filter down with some sort of elbow connection. True, it will not be a seal all the way to the hood but it usually works out for me. Plus, that far in front the engine bay works well. If it were noticeable that heat was a problem I would just wrap the system with heat tape. And, If I hadn't had 3 back surgeries I would possibly do more. Sometimes I will instruct my wonderful wife and she does most of the actual install. She is becoming quite the mechanic.
 
Forum members think that a CAI is a hot temp. intake after removing the factory box. I just removed my stock box for a CAI. The fresh air locations are where the new CAI is, 2 postions. I don't see any evidence of hot air entering the CAI anymore than the stock air box.

I only call it a warm air intake without a shroud. :)

If you just had a cone filter sitting over there, the warm air from the radiator and engine would make their way over to the intake and be pulled in. By having a shroud, you separate the underhood air from the intake air and make it pull from other places, like the stock airbox does. It's less about heat shielding, and more about the source of intake airflow.

That's the theory anyways. Exactly what that boils down to in HP is probably laughable. The biggest danger is detonation. Most likely it will just make the engine less efficient.
 
You will have very little gain from just adding a cone filter. Most of the improvement comes from removing that atrocity of a factory intake tube.
