Brake Piston Trouble, Please Help =-/

ok i was doing rear brakes on the LS when a buddy came by and offered to "help".. welllll... he apparently didnt tighten one of the piston assembly bolts and it worked its way out when i was leaving my neighborhood allowing one of the pads to come OUT. drove it straight home and parked it. well im working on it now and have new pads and all of it torn back apart again and the piston will not recede enough to be even close to fitting the pads and rotor. its gotta be open atleast another 5/8" and it is not closing anymore. it just turns and turns but does not go back in (i actually made a mark to watch it to make sure it wasnt just going in slow). anyone got any advice? could the piston assembly been damaged when the pad came out? maybe it came out too far? i was thinking about trying to put some pressure on it with a big C-clamp then try the lame brake tool again but i didnt want to damage anything further. gotta love when simple jobs turn into nightmares ;)
 
you could try a little compression as you turn, but might be easiest just to go buy a new rear caliper... you'd have them swapped in less time than messing with this one... Pretty cheap too IIRC...

I've had a front come loose and come apart (was able to put it back together) but never a rear
 
these are the worst vehicles to do brakes on lol. i was hoping to not have to bleed the brakes, if i changed the whole caliper assembly would i have to bleed them?
 
fill the caliper after you install... but you'll atleast need to do that brake... if you dont lose to much, you'll prob be ok

There are many other cars that you have to rotate the piston while applying pressure to it. It is trivial to do with the correct tool that applies pressure while turning.

Yes, you will have to bleed that brake. The rest should be okay.
I hope you checked the other side for loose bolts.
 
i opened the bleeder to hopefully assist in lowering the pressure and make it go in but didnt help. its still stuck out. that brake tool kit looks sweet. i gotta try and get this thing knocked out, ive wasted enough time on it already. just gotta decide if i want to TRY to get this piston in or just replace lol.
 
my local HFT has that brake tool set, thinking it would prob be better to spend $40 on TOOLS than a new caliper LOL..

Try doing brakes on a 14y old E36 BMW. In comparison, the LS brakes are super easy.
 
i went and grabbed a kit. ill finish it up tmrw i guess. and no thanks on the beamer lol. im sure it sucks.
