I decided to do some surgery on my 2nd gens headlight. The individual housing that protects the hid bulb was broken and that allowed water to get inside the main housing. There were many water spots on the bottom of the housing, which made it look UGLY so I painted it black. I really like it now!! FYI, the turn signals shines just fine during the day and night. What do you guys think.
I've seen one other mark with blacked out lights like this

These first pics are the process. I used JB weld to spot weld and filled in the rest with a black silicone.

I think it looks great, Was it hard to gettin the lens to line back up? sounds lke a good idea but id be a little cautious drilling into those things, there not cheap...

Do they leak at all? if not im gunna try it out

It wasn't hard to line it up. As soon as I got it in the right spot I taped it up and adjusted it little by little until I was right. I only used jb weld in a few spots and pluged the rest with a waterproof silicone. Hopefully it keep the water out, if not i'll jb weld the whole thing.

Looks good. I dunno if it would look right with anything but a black car. If I get a black gen 2 I may be copying your idea :D

The only thing that would bother me... Two, actually:

1. The front blinkers would be very dim, if visible at all in the daytime when activated. If I were to hit you while you were turning and had your blinkers on, I would own you in court because I could not see your blinkers. That's something you may want to keep in the back of your head when you're driving around.

2. You lost the cornering lamps' ability to illuminate around corners. It's just a personal thing for me, but I don't think I could live without that little light when turning. That, and I do use the cornering lights at night to check out a potential cutie in the car next to me. Click on the blinker, illuminate the potential hottie (No, not Debbi's idea of a "hottie"), and evaluate.

I like the other guys blacked out headlight better I think... , ya know blue t?

It looks like you h/l has a ring around it... needs more black I guess

Other wise I think it looks mean!

Dude that looks good but,.... did you get pulled over yet. I cant see that beeing up to standards. You should post a real good night time pic, and maybe try some very bright bulbs before some old person hits yah.

I had those same concerns Frogman, but that light was done! I looked good from far away but as soon as you got close to it, it looked UGLY! Too much fading and many water spots! I was originally going to buy a new/better one and call it a day, but then I saw the original blacked out lens Mark. I thought it looked BAD A$$ and decided why not give it a shot. I was really concerned about the turn signal and its visibility during the California summer days but I tested it in the sun before I welded it together. I would say it’s about 80% when compared to the stock illumination. I can also remove the shield for the turn signal if I feel its not emitting enough light (that why I spot welded for easy removal). When I tested it without the shield it seemed to be at 90%, but the shield made it look better so I put it back. As far as the cornering lamp, :( only works at night now, but I can live without it. I am going to get a set of stock headlights and make the other pair for the blacked out lens.

I’m a senior at CSU Fullerton major in Criminal Justice (graduating this semester:) ) and I completely know the legality of what I did, there is none. The last thing I need is a ticket since I will be applying to several police agencies in the next few months. This was the major concern for me, but I don’t drive like an ass so I really have nothing to worry about. If anything, I’ll get pulled over for my tinted windows first. I also have a 94 Mark VIII which is my daily-driver, the black one is my weekend car. I have a clean record and want to keep it that way. Around here, you really only get pulled over for driving like an ass/deserve one or for committing a traffic infraction.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I'll get some night pics up tonight.

Good luck, it might be legal but if a cop cant see it, it would suck to get pulled over for simply not useing your turn signal when you honestly have used it. This is petty but it seems you are concerned even more than someone that dosent know you personaly would have thought.

I think I like Lee's (blue_t) better because he painted the ring around the headlight to really tie it in with the car...

Other wise I think I like it

I know I am going to try it

Could you PM with more details of what you did for paint and how you separated the housing?

I think it looks good, would like to see a night pic though. It would look better if you had painted the ring around the headlight too.

A little tip I picked up for fixing water filled headlights:
Remove the headlights from the car
Take out the bulbs and pour some rubbing alcohol in them and swish it around and then dump it out, repeat if condesation remains.
Reaseal around the lense with a silicone sealer, anything that will bond to the plastic will work.
Reinstal the bulbs putting liberal amount of dielectric grease to help the bulbs seal as good as possible.
Reinstall and enjoy.

I promise I'll have a night photo up tonight (pacific-time). I completely forgot about painting the silver ring, but I should have painted it. BTW, at night it lights up great. I was thinking about using a high gloss but chickened out so I used a semi-gloss.

I was going to do the same thing to mine... nice job... looks mean on a black 2nd gen LSC.
