Just brought home a 76 ford f-150 explorer. I pretty much stole it. It has a 390, which I have been told is a BB. I also can tell so far that it has a 9 inch rear axle. If anyone knows of the engine and can give feedback I would appreciate it.

It is a very solid old truck (also note the wife drove it home over 70 miles with only a few issues) . The cab is in wonderful condition and so is the hood and frontend. It's dark green with a white stripe on the hood and on the side. I took it straight from the guys house to the shop and put the 38.5x11.0x15 Interco Super swamper boggers. It needed minimul fender trimming to make them fit. And turned it into one beast of a truck. I will post pics tomorrow.

My main question is do you guys know of any good ford forums that specialize in old stuff?

the 390 is from the fe family as stated above. wierd thing about em is the pushrods go through the intake manifold. now lets see some pics!

I have been told this is a good motor. And someone else said it didn't have hardened valve seats is that something I should worry about?

if the motor has ever bin out it has hardened seats.... but if u like the truck, msd it, take off that boat anchor of an intake and get a edelbrock and top it off with a 670 holly truck avenger... it will have so much torque
if you want ill take pics of the motor tomorrow

Nice truck! The 390 FE is one of my favorite engines. My first car was a '67 Fairlane 500 XL fastback with a 2-bbl 390. That was a torque monster! It had 280hp and 410 ft-lbs of torque with the 2-bbl and single exhaust and 9.5:1 compression. I've always been a fan of the FE block. The old 427 side-oiler is an FE. As is the 332, 352, 360, 406, and 428. Anyway, have fun with it. Put a 4 barrel on it and some dual exhaust and it'll be a beast!

73-79 Fords

I've got '74 F250 Ranger. 390, headers, true duals w/ h-pipe, comp cam 280 kit, mallory unilite, four row radiator, dual batteries, factory air in dash, 800 watts of sound, bucket seats, homebuilt console, carpeted, one ton springs, C6 w/ shift kit, Dana 60 w/overloads. Motor rebuilt 3 years ago, 30K miles on new motor and trans.
Had it since 1990. Hauled 2800lb. camper in bed, with 1900lb. boat and trailer behind, still accelerated uphill over the blueridge mountains.
Has 33's on chrome wagon wheels, 8 lug!
Has new grill, grill guard, bumpers and windshield. Bed is pretty rusty, cab OK, new cab mounts installed, 2" body lift in it.
390's will pull the hinges off the gates of hell if you want, but there better be a gas pump by the gates! Dual tanks- 42 gallons times $3/gal= Ouch! When gas was $4/gal, I have dumped $150 in it to get it full. 8-12 mpg loaded or empty.
LMC truck in KC has everything needed to build one from ground up. Couple other places have lots of stuff for these.
Considered ugly ducklings for years- getting popular now.

i would trade my 86 k10 with a 79 ford in a heartbeat... i can do without it being all jacked up but 4x4 is necessary... (mine is rolling on 38s)

Nice!!!

Good to see you around here buddy... try ford truck fanatics, good group of guys, really fun forum.

Well here are sometime daytime pics of the truck. She is an absolute beast. On the highway at 55 with the swampers it screams (The motor) like a banshee. It's got a 9 inch rear and has got to have a high gear ratio. I put the bullwinkle mirrors on it and have yet to do the bushings in the frontend. She will be running hard soon. I plan on getting back to the Funrunmudrun.com soon.

If any of you have any extra parts or ideas on where I should look locally let me know.

Also SHE WILL HAVE STACKS................
