Finally got my car back from having a new motor put in. All is well except that i hear a grinding noise at idle and sometimes when i am at a drive Thur window. If I rev the engine it starts to go away. I think that it is the pulleys and belt tensioner. Any input would be appreciated. Also car runs perfect and I don't think it's the secondary timing chain or tensioner. the sound is coming from the left and right of the engine bay lower not upper.

2000 Lincoln LS
3.9 V8 Sport.
New motor with 87k.

well step one is identifying which pulley it is... a carefully placed shot of WD-40 might help start eliminating which one it is... Tensioner pulley and water pump are great places to start.... Did you pay a shop to put the engine in.... I wouldn't have and still wouldn't except the car back if you have a grinding noise?!?!....

I agree with Rell. You should work through the shop who did the installation.

The shop only warranties for a rod knock, not accessory parts and belts. all together for motor and install $2,300.00. motor has 87k on it. I already replaced the secondary tensioners and chains with the kit from Christopher's motors. which was easy to do. took me 2 hrs. I figure the belt has to be changed anyway so I may as well do the pulleys all at once.

:eek::eek: $2300 for a used motor! ... AND, you had to do tensioners already???.... wow. Maybe i'm off but that seems crazy high..

The place is only set up to pull and install motors. They don't do any repairs or else I would have had them do a full timing chain setup while the motor was out of the car. All in all I can't complain.

as long as your satisfied... thats all that matters. hope it works out for ya... any luck with the pulleys?

$2300 is a very fair price a motor for the ls is no less than $1000 and i would not touch this motor for less than $1000 for removal and install.

then u gotta factor in the coolant the oil and whatever other misc part you need when u replace an engine.

You do NOT need to replace all your pulleys remove the belt and spin them by hand if they feel like they drag then you know they are bad you can also remove them and spin them off the motor.

i suppose... tough car value / repair ratio though... specially on a 90K engine... But i guess not to many other options...

after checking it out better today as the temp outside hit 60 degrees, I think the water pump is on it's way out, with the motor running I can see that the pulley wiggles a little bit.

Well, make sure the pulley is actually firmly bolted to the pump. If it is, and it's moving, that's a very very bad sign. You're about to have a geyser instead of an engine.
