ok guys, I was wondering if there is anything I should look at or replace while I'm tearing it down to replace the belt, belt ten. ass., and the idler pulleys. I'm also going to change the t-stat and flush all the fluids up front.

Let me know if there is anything I'm missing or need to replace while I have everything apart. Also any tips on doing it?

If you are replacing the thermostat, make sure you replace the thermostat housing and the coolant outlet pipe. They tend to fail as soon as you change the thermostat. By the way, the LS does not have a timing belt, it has timing chains. Their are certain tools you are going to either need to buy or rent to hold the cams in place and so you do not mess with the timing. Make sure you replace the guides and tensioner arms when you do this. If you do not you may run into this problem in the very near future. Good luck. I hope everything goes well.

Sorry about that, I ment I'm changing the serp. belt along with the idler pulleys and belt ten. ass. What coolant outlet pipe are you talking about? I wasnt aware of one on the 00-02 ls, I thought only the 03 and up had those?

The gen I does have something by the same name, but I think that it is a simpler, metal, part. No need to replace it.

Don't get any coolant on the new belt.

Update: Add a degas tank to the list of things to change out.

The coolant pipes are plastic on my gen I and I think it is called the coolant crossover pipe. I changed my t-stat and one of the little nipples broke off when trying to pull the hose off it. Go ahead and replace all the coolant pipes now along with the degas bottle.

Gen I has plastic crossover pipe,t-stat housing and water outlet pipe. Also replace the cap on the water outlet.
Crossover pipe includes its gaskets from Motorcraft. T-stat housing does not.

Good to know...

Check the blinker fluid circuit board and the knutsen valve while you have the belt off.

If there is any corrosion on the blinker fluid circuit board, replace it. If the knutsen valve is showing signs of damage, keep it. If it still looks new, take a hammer to it. They work better once they're dented up a bit. Don't know why...

I just tore into it tonight and going to replace the heater control valve, all the hoses, the t-stat, and the degas tank. Also changing the belt and all the pulleys. Hope fully that takes care of the problem.

I'm also debating about changing the solenoid if I can find the info on it tonight.

Note that when I did the tensionners, I went after all the hoses. Ordered everything from Rock Auto that seemed even vaguely appropriate.
The only one that fit was the water neck to throttle body (runs under the intake). None of the other 15 (yes, 15!) hoses that I ordered fit anywhere. :(

Solenoid? You mean the one on the hydraulic pump for the fan? It's easy to find - it's the only electrical connection going to the pump. Can't remember how it's attached. If yours works, don't bother. Maybe buy the solenoid to have on hand, but I'd say it's not worth mucking with before it causes a problem.

What's your mileage? My '02 was at 150k and everything was in really good shape. Even the degas.
