Tossed the 3G 130 amp alternator onto the Lincoln's 5.0 litre tonight. Mechanically it was a walk in the park. Drilled out the big bolt ear to 7/16", serpentine belt lines up perfectly, though 1" too short (anticipated that). Beat the upper bracket flatter and die ground the adjustment groove wider so it all fit on.
Electrical should have been easier as I had a 3G alternator harness from a 1990 Town car, similar to mine. Granted the donor was the smaller case 95 amp that the car had and the larger Mustang/Windstar 130 case that I put on mine. Everything bolted up electricially, no soldering required, just plug in and bolt to fuse box.
Started the car and the battery symbol came on and stayed on. Lights seem bright, getting 14.73 volts across the battery (battery is pretty new and haven't had a days trouble from it since buying the car 6 weeks ago). BTW I had the alternator bench tested when I bought it and it passed with flying colours.
What gives ? Any suggestions ? Is there something you have to reset on a Lincoln when you disconnect the battery ? Everything else seems to be working, though the dash lights flicked off for one second (causing me heart failure) upon start up.
Any ideas appreciated
