I need some help from you guys.
Heres the situation. My engine light came on, so while I had my car at the dealer to get a new key made I had them check to see what was wrong.($110 for that) They confirmed what I initially thought that my bank 2 cat converter failed. I went and talked to my mechanic since it would cost almost twice as much to fix it at the dealer. I know the CAT doesnt have an effect on performance and he told me that it could even pass emissions with it. So now my issue is do I replace it which would cost about 600 bucks or do I just leave it. I hate that my engine light is on because I take care of my vehicles and it doesnt look to good to have your engine light on, plus its just plain ANNOYING.
So my question is I want to know if there is any way to "fool" the computer to think that the CAT is fine, so that the engine light will stay off. I know I can reset it but then it only comes back on after 50-100km. I'd hate to pay 600 bucks for something that gives me no benefit and just turns off a damn light.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know what it's like in Canada, but in the US, there's an 8-year, 80,000 mile Federal warranty on most emissions systems components, including the cats. You might see if there's a Canadian equivalent, or if Canadian LSes are also covered...

Theres no more warranty on those parts for my car.
Is there any way to just turn off the engine light permanently?

Double check on the warranty. A cat warranty GREATLY outlasts all your other warranties.

Depending on what is actually failed in the cat it CAN have quite an effect on performance. If the "bricks" crumbled you could have quite an exhaust blockage.

The other concern is WHY the cat failed. Considering this car isn't very old, to my knowledge what normally kills cats is getting a lot of unburned gas dumped on them. You may want to have your injectors and coils on that side tested as well.

If you just want to get rid of the light, pull the bulb.

Forgot...there are others here who have had aftermarket cats welded in. I suspect that route would be a lot less than $600.

My warranty was up at 120,000 km and im at 140,000 now. the performance of the car is fine and the dealer said it was fine not to fix it now. So im assuming that its the end of its life and that other problems didnt cause it. I hope so anyways. Should I still get that stuff checked out?

How do I pull the bulb? Do i have to take the dash apart to get in there??
