I wanted to know the symptoms of a bad cat?I have a 97 lsc i bought for 400 dollars with a bad headgasket he told me it had codes for both side cats.So i had a 67k 98 engine installed so of course the driver side code went away. The passenger code kept coming back so i put another o2 sensor in it hasnt came back yet.My message center mpg wont go past 9.7mpg it kills on gas i wanted to know if a cat is bad will putting a fresh o2 sensor in cover it up for a while.Everything that can be tuned up is all up to date.

The new sensor would definitely tell you you the kitty cat is bad.

But wait. Which sensor did you replace? The one in front of the pass side cat, or the one after the cat? The rear O2 sensors monitor the catalyst efficiency. The front ones do not.

You'll typically smell a rotten egg smell when the cats are bad.

well i just went on craigslist guy in my town is selling a xcal 3 tuner someone on here was telling me about them being able to do datalogging im thinking bout getting it to determine the problem with this car.He wants 300 obo and its brand new.

Run from the X-3..
get a cheaper and more dependable X-2
The X-3's were produced to support the newer vehicles.
There is no benifit to have an X-3 over an X-2 for our "old cars".

The X-2 datalogs just fine.
Even if you get a locked Xcal 2 from ebay it will STILL datalog your car and read and clear trouble codes

Also

300 is far far too much money for a used device.

ok but it was brand new for 300

and it doesn't have tunes on it for your car.
add 75.00-150.00 for each tune you would like to add.

and again..

the X-3's are NOT better than the X-2's especially for our old cars.

If you had an 05 or up, I'd say you "need" the X-3.

ok but it was brand new for 300

if it's "brand new" then it should be coming from and "SCT Dealer".

Is that the case?

If not then it's NOT brand new it's "pre-owned" and you wont have any warranty or support from SCT

Not only that, but is it brand new and unlocked? If the guy had tunes put on it, and he uploaded one of those tunes to his vehicle, then the device will be locked to his vehicles' VIN and useless to you unless he loaded the stock tune back into his vehicle's computer.

pre-owned
no warranty
no support
still needs tunes for your car
ect.

250 is still too much IMHO

you can get a Xcal 2 on ebay for half of that.

okay im think im going to back off of it then.So the xcal 2 does come with tunes already?

no
unless you buy it from someone that has a mark 8

tune prices are still the same

or add 300.00 to the cost and make your own tunes

300 would be much better spent on "the software" that makes the tunes than a used X-3 IMHO

i just want it for datalogging to find out whats wrong with my car i dont care for the tunes thats why i was asking about the xcal 3

If you dont care about the tunes,
Get a locked Xcal2 off ebay for 100 or less..
when they are locked they will still datalog, and they will also read and clear your trouble codes.

o damn ok thanks for the info but if i did happen to want to get it unlocked how would i do so

o damn ok thanks for the info but if i did happen to want to get it unlocked how would i do so

if you ever plan on tuning your car with it, dont get a locked one.
I ONLY suggested it because you said you ONLY cared about the datalogging..and THAT means its a very cheap alternative to the 250-300 dollar X-3

hey xlr what is autotap is it a scanner dont mean to be a bother but what obd 2 software tools can i use to data log only or just check sensors.
