My transmission has been having a delayed/rough shift into third for a while, seems to be gradually getting worse. I've been planning on doing the rebuild that mikeyswood did. The other day as it had a shift into third like above the "E" and "check transmission" indicators came on, along with the CEL.

Well this evening I finally made it into autozone to get the code read. This is what they gave me.

P0745 - Pressure Control Solenoid Malfunction

Under explanation it says P0731, P0732, P0733, and P0734 were set together. These indicate incorrect gear ratios for gears 1 - 4.

Anyone have any input for this situation or have some experience with these codes?

Like I said, I plan to do the rebuild or possibly replace the transmission if it proves necessary. Members care to share where you have gotten transmissions in the past? Straight through Ford? Refurbished from auto parts stores? Thanks for all info in advance.

EDIT: Also, only shifts rough if accelerating modestly. If I have 50% - 60% or more throttle the shifts are smooth and firm.

My '03 LS8 (5r55s trans) was slamming third so hard it would chirp third at wide open throttle. It also shuddering into and out of 4th. There's also been this 200 rpm surging that happened occasionally as we rolled on the gas at expressway speeds for the last 2 years. There were no codes. We've had the car 120,000 miles and the trans has always felt a little confused and not shifted very well. It has 175,000 miles on it today.

Mostly the hard shifting was caused by a bad PCM. The surging was the lock up torque converter. The shudder was the PCM or a burned band. I paid $2238 ($1600 for the trans, the rest was the PCM) for parts and labor to rebuild the trans, replace the torque converter, replace the PCM, and reflash the PCM. I was told the servo bores were very worn. The work was done by a local shop. 1 year warranty on parts and labor. I'm very happy. I never had any idea my 5r55s could shift so well.
