hesitant to ask seeings how last overheating post got slammed..lol

2001 LS V8, 75kmiles

Started car last night about 70 degrees here in vegas, let the car idle for about 10-15 minutes while shootin the **** with a buddy from work, a/c wasnt on. got in, got about 1/4 mile down the road an noticed temp gauge rising fast then check engine temp lit up. pulled over turned off the car, got out and could hear the coolant bubbling, and got underneath to see coolant dripping out just behind drivers side wheel.

let car sit for about 15 mintues an started it back up drove it 15 miles home with no issues, was about hair line past middle on temp gauge.

Read that this could be a cracked "degas bottle" or coolant bottle. Any suggestings. or what too check on this weekend.

My suggestion is to replace the degas bottle. That's your problem.

You probably have a cracked degas bottle. You may have other problems too. You can either start with a cooling system pressure leak down test, or replace the degas bottle and go from there.
I think that replacing the degas bottle is a pretty safe bet. (It may not be all that you need to do, but it is almost certain to be something that you need to do.)

75k on a 2001??? I have the exact car with 200k+... wow!

Anyway, yes, definately the plastic coolant reseirvoir.
If you drove your LS a little more, you would have had this problem years ago and you wouldn't have to worry about it now :D

Just to add more info.
When I repaired mine I was told i had a crack in the coolant reseirvoir. When it heats up, it expands allowing air in, thus the very fast overheating.

You might be able to drive it for hours without it overheating... but then at any moment it expands just right... and BAM! " Engine reducing power"

Good to know I have plentyo of miles left thanks cableguy

Yea drove to work nice an easy today. Temp was normal an let it idle for awhile no issues. Just strange how that happened all of sudden an now "fine"
Will look at it this weekend for sure. Probably could use a flush seeing how summer OS pretty much here.

Where can I purchase said Degas bottle. Local parts store? An from what I've read remove driver tire an its up under splash guard.....?? Will do research on replaceMent an bleeding.

Buy it from Max (Five Star --->).

It comes with the small hose at the bottom already attached. There is no need at all to remove the wheel and/or splash guard. Just disconnect the hose at the other end (just left of the brake vacuum booster). It's not a hard job to replace the bottle.

My 2002 V8 LSE must have been different. The new hose was attached to the new degas bottle. The hose was approx (Im going off of memory) 3 feet long? The end of the hose connects via clamp at a location of the car that's behind the drivers side wheel up under the splashguard. So, in order to remove the old hose while it was attached to the old degas bottle, I needed to loosen the hose clamp from that lower location..in order to remove the old degas bottle and old hose as one unit

It could well be. I can only speak for the gen II (or at least the 2004 & 2006).

Called autozone 95 bucks for coolant resvoir tank. Sound right for "Degas bottle". Has large house from bottle an two smaller ones up top. That's how described over the phone.

That seems fair enough. What's the square footage of the large house?

Have to wait until May 14th for it to be back in stock at that link. Good price though.
