an "E" on the cluster where the it shows your gears

the letter "E" started showing up on the speedometer cluster where it shows what gear your in..
what does it mean?
i have an 02' lincoln ls

It means that a problem with your transmission has been identified by the PCM. Continuing to drive your LS with this issue may lead to more damage or the destruction of your transmission. You need to get it checked out. Go to a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer or a good independent. Avoid chains like AAMCO (All Automatics Must Come Out), Sears, Firestone, Pep Boys, ...

Every experience I've ever had with an AAMCO has been a scam. The others he mentioned aren't going to diagnose much, just quote you on a reman and labor. Only good experience I have ever had is with an independent shop that actually R&R themselves. Dealers are good too, but can be pricey.
