I took my alternator to a local auto electric shop after it was only putting out 12.3 volts at idle.

He took it apart and said it looked like new but said there was a bad connection and he fixed it.

Well now I'm getting the same thing, but when I rev it to about 1500 I get a solid 14v out of it. I'm going to try cleaning the contacts and see if that helps.

Could this be a wiring issue? Any other thoughts on it?

Thanks!

I had mine rebuilt at a local place I always use and had the same problem.

Get one from max.

When my Mark Alt's bearings went bad I picked one up from Autozone and they said if it ever goes bad again they replace it. Hope it holds true when I bring it in again??

I really want to polish my alternator case.... but I don't know what I will do when it goes bad...

If u got an alt from autozone and it lasts for a long time. When I had my 1st mark the alt went bad. Ray told me to buy a brand new one. but of course I didnt listen. So for me not listening I went threw 7 of them before i finally got a brand new one.

I bought an alternator from pepboys with lifetime warranty. Back in the summer and it just died last week. I should of bought one from Max but didn't

Anyway I just upgraded my stereo and added a 3 farad cap with a voltage meter on the top of it. Well of course I find at idle my car is putting out 11.9 or 12.4 varying

I gotta get someone to throttle it a bit tomorrow so I can see what the voltage is with some RPM. I replaced this alt about a year ago or a bit more so I gotta see what they say when I bring it back cause it's undercharging

Trac-lock, Gears, & Exhaust? Seriously though, I know the wire has to be bigger but what else needs to be upgraded to make it effective?

I do not understand your post,

You need to update the grounds alternator cable, and starter cable. remember with a 98 the cables have seen thier share of corrosion making them less effective, now add the age of the insulation which im certain is aged and deterioated lowering thier effectivness.

Do the big 3 before messing with the charging system bottom line.

starter cable? i thought it was batt neg to body ground, batt poss to post on batt junction box (underhood fuse box) and from there to alt

I did all of them, engine ground, body grounds, dash grounds, batteries to fuse blocks, front battery to starter,

Got a replacement from O'Reillys and now I've got a healthy 14.5 at the battery when running. Looks like my cables are just fine...

^ true - I went through 4 reman'd starters for my SHo. They were from Autozone (2 of them went within 10k or less) - Checker (died after 15k) - and finally Oreillys (lasted until I sold the car).

I'm going to keep a (used) spare alt in the trunk just in case...

Did you check with Max ?

I was fighting AlT. issues, bought one from Max and never had a problem.
Max is the best.

I hope you got lucky and got a good one.

In the interest of getting one now rather than waiting I picked this one up...

I should've checked with max.
