I am installing a Viper alarm with remote start in my 1996. The wire printout from DEI says for the tachometer wire, "tan/stripe" and that it is at the ignition coil.

Which ignition coil? and what color of stripe? anyone had this problem? know what wire to use? each coil has a wire that can be considered "tan" wiht a stripe and a wire that is either brown or tan with a stripe...

The number in brackets beside the wire colors below are the PCM pin according to my '96 manual. Always test them first, it should say how to in your install manual.

I can't remember exactly which wire I used, but you can try catching a signal off the the coils.
T/LG(78), T/LB(104), T/W(26), or T/O(52) coming from off the coil packs in the engine bay, or try finding them at the PCM if you want... just always test first! They are the coil output wires from the PCM to the 4 coils (two coil packs at each side you see.)

The T/Y(48) at the PCM is the Tach signal to the dash and might be useful as well to try?

Another option if these don't work is to use a fuel injector signal wire. There are two wires to each injector, use one that is not Red (it's the common wire to all.)
They are BR/Y(74), BR/LB(100), T/R(72), LB(98), T(75), W(101), T/BK(73), LG/O(99).

Good luck...
:)

if its a viper system you should try one of the injector wires( the one that is not common), with a lot of fords if you go to one of coils (or coils packs) the car will start but it will only run for about 2 mins befor it shuts off, i'm not sure why it shuts down but if you run a dianostic on the viper system it gives the code for "over rev, under rev protection"
