advice needed on paint.

im goin to paint the chrome trim on my 2000 LS black.

front bumper trim.
rear bumper trim.
rear plate surround
and im not sure if I should paint the grill surround or leave it chrome.

I intend on getting black 20s with a chrome lip so that the Chrome window trim and silver break rotors will be accented.

so my question is should I remove the trim b4 I paint or should I just tape it up real nice and paint?

im a pretty experanced painter so i I wer to use the tape method I think it would go alright in coparied to me removing the trim and possibaly breaking the clips. or worse snapping the trim.

In order to paint the chrome pieces properly you are going to have to sand them a little and prep them and that might be kind of hard doing on the car. You run the risk of scuffing your bumpers so IMO it would be best that you remove them.
 
You'll need a plastic primer. I'm sure some of the guys who have done this will chime in with the exact kind they used.
 
Well there is a thread some where around here about using black 3M pin striping for the window trim and it looked factory.


For the bumper I suggest just getting the sport bumpers but thats gunna cost way more. IMO, even with it painted you can still see this thing on the bumper that used to be chrome and it just looks better without anything there at all.


Its gunna chip being that its on the bumper pretty easy. At least the front will chip easier anyway.

my cars pearl so everything that is chrome would be black.
 
I believe he was just talking about the chrome trim around the windows, not the bumber in particular. I thought about painting my bumper trim but I started thinking about road debris and how it would chip quiclky. So im just gonna save my money for a sport or lse bumper.
 
i love having all my stuff painted but I started with a sport. i dont know about doing a non sport bumper.... i think i would swap them before I painted them

Why?

Well regardless of that its still not gunna turn out good in a few months. Maybe a few weeks if you drive on the highway.

the paint job will turn out better if you take the pieces off the bumper. As long as you use a plastic primer and a flex additive in the paint then you should have no problems with the trim. I have had many motorcycles and custom paint everyone of them and I have never had a problem with chipping or flaking. As long as you take your time and use the correct products then you should have any problems. Post pics when your done. Hope I helped.

Dude its not gunna work. Go do it and post pics of the huge chips when you are done. The paint will stick and the trim wont flex. But, it will chip easy!


I wish you the most luck but its not worth the frustrations.

I don't understand why you insist it will not work. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean that it can't be done. About 90% of the bodywork on a Jap bike is made of ABS plastic, which is what the chrome trim is, and if you do it like I suggested then you should not get any chipping. I have a paint job right now that been on the bike for 2 years and only has one small paint chip.

Just because it can be done dont mean it will last. And yes I can do it fine and probably much better than you can. Oh now slick paints bikes huh? Get a life.

Dont take any of slicks advice.

Heres a good idea man. Go on paint scratch.com and get all the primer and paint along with prepping materials you need. Do a good job on the prepping and then painting. Then after that is all done go and take the pieces to a shop and have a good professional clear coat done up with some advanced tools. Lots of real painters will agree that no matter how good of a job you think you can do with a can and even if you can do a great job clear coat is just best left for the shops and the tools they use. Its a pretty critical step in keeping that paint on that trim.


I mean lots of people can pant these trims. Lots of people do paint the grille surrounds and license plate surrounds but do to the fact that the grille is dab smack up front it has more of a chance of getting nicked and chipping by road debris than the rear same goes for the trim. Search on it and see how many people complain about the grille chipping but never complain about the rear. Lots of people say the work on the grilles turns out great and it does but then it chips. So then if you think about it, it will stick, it wont bubble and it wont run if prepped correctly so the last step being the clear coat must be done right or it will chip.


One last thought, paintscratch.com is a great site with lots of good stuff. Search around for your paint code-you'll find it and you can get it in a rattle can to do it yourself. Unless of course you really want that black trim.


Meanwhile with the trim getting the clear coat do a good detail job on the rest of the car to match that fresh paint on the trim:cool: .

1st you tell the guy not to even attempt to do it and now you are telling him where to get the things he needs
2nd Pete just said a couple of replies ago that he is satisfied with his front painted and I know you are going to say that it was not the chrome trim but once the plastic is primed properly then it really doesn't matter if it was chromed or not. The paint sticks to the primer not the chrome.
I haven't said anything to you in a while but it seems like everytime I make a post you have to make a comment saying that what I said is wrong, right after I make a post. Paint it or don't paint it but make up your mind on what advice you are going to give. Way to ruin another thread.

And what exactly does the primer stick to? Once again :
So then if you think about it, it will stick, it wont bubble and it wont run if prepped correctly so the last step being the clear coat must be done right or it will chip.
