98 Mark VIII JBL Amplifier

I don't know for sure but I think it's on its last legs.....Driving the car today the amp was dropping the sound and then regain it.....A little annoying to say the least.....I'm asking 3 questions: 1) What are the symptoms of an amp going bad......2) Is it a difficult to swap out the JBL amp and 3) If I swap out the JBL should I stay with JBL or move to another brand....Some brand suggestions would help.....I did change the speakers, they are Kicker.....
