A guy on craigslist has a complete rear end assembly off an 89 TC. It has 3.55 gears, is 28 spline, and has a trac loc. I'm thinking of buying it. Can I just swap the differential pumpkin and call it good? Or do I have to do some other work?

Thanks...

It will swap but IIRC all the tbird housings are cast iron not aluminum like the Mark so it will add a few pounds.

After rereading your post. FYI TC(TurboCoupes) were 88 and older fox body cars with solid rear axles. 89 and up would be a SC(supercoupe) which is the MN12 with IRS

Humm, I don't remember him saying SC. It's a 28 spline unit... and he does work on mustangs a lot - so you might be right there that it's for fox bodies.

I wouldn't wast your time, going to a cast iron center with 3.55 gears just isn't worth it, unless it were free.

Is this the whole IRS housing or just the carrier(trak lok) and gears? The trac lok and gears will work from any 28 spline 8.8 car. However there are IRS specific trac loks and the consencus seems to be the non IRS carriers are a major PITA if you have to get back into the rear and pull the axles.

I wouldn't go that far. If it is a complete housing that you can swap in as opposed to buying new parts for close to $500 and paying some a few hundred more to install them it might be worth a few bux. But yeah personally I wouldn't(and didn't) bother either.

if you can just throw it in I think it would be worth it just for the trac loc not being a one wheel wonder is nice and the gears are just an extra benefit amusing that you get it for a good price

I bet he has the year wrong, as stated above TC's were 88 and older, SC's were 89+. An SC rear would swap, but no SC's came with a 3.55 rear, it was 3.27s for automatics and 2.73s for manuals. So I'd bet it's a TC rear, and I wouldn't bother...

Alright well it's a shame but I think I have to pass on it. It seems to not be as direct of a swap as I thought.

The 87-88 turbos coupes had the 3.55 gears & trac loc, but like stated above it is a 8.8 SOLID rear axle.
