4th gear tranny problem

I have a 2000 lincoln LS ( non sport, non SST) w/ automatic transmission.
when i select 1st gear it shows as 1st on the dash,
2nd = 2
3rd = 3,
but fourth registers on the dash as 5th gear.
while driving on the highway at 70 mph i downshift from 5th to 4th
and my rpms dont jump ( any) and it still says 5th gear.

anybody hear of this before or know where to start looking?
 
You are still able to select the gears without SST, over to the right from D5 is D4, down 1 is D3 and so on.

Mine shows D4 when I move it over but I have never tried it while doing 70 though. Maybe 70 is too fast to switch into 4th, might have a built in speed limit per gear. I am not sure, just guessing.
 
I was only using the 70 mph as an example, it does not work while upshifting from d3 at any rate of speed. shows d5 when i select d4.
 
First off, there is no D3.

If the window doesn't show a shift to D4 I would suspect the shifter. Mine did that (wouldn't shift to D4 even though I moved the shifter over) years ago and it was a diode in the shifter. The dealer replaced the shifter under warranty and everything worked fine.
 
i meant 3rd gear, not d3, sorry.
thanks for the help, ill try to pull up a schematic and replace it myself.


did they replace the diode or the whole shifter?
and when you say shifter, you mean the module attatched to the tranny correct?

mine does the same stupid thing, if i mess with it it will sometimes register D4. but most time it just shows D5.

why do you want D4 anyways?
 
So you aren't actually referring to the gear it is using. But the range, shift mode, whatever you want to call it. As in the old days when we just had a simple PRNDL. When you go between the modern version of D and L (D4 and D5) it doesn't show that it is acutally changing. Is that stating it correctly? Or are you referring to the actual gear it is using as in first, second, third, fourth and fifth gear? It almost sounds to me like you are getting them confused.
 
nope, definately not confused.
I am referring to the selected gear on the (automatic transmission) shifter.
It will not "give" me a 4th gear, only 1,2,3 and 5th.
or it will not show d4 on the dash, which it does on my buddy's lincoln LS ( 2001) v6. same tranny.

i select 4th gear by means of the shifter and it shows d4 on the dash ( on his lincoln)
 
right, I got ya now. I bet it is an electrical issue with the shifter. But, I've never taken one apart so what do I know?
 
it is just an electrical error, i know exactly what you're talking about i had the same problem with mine so i just swapped out for the SST shifter. now i just need a sct to get that 1st gear shift!!
 
hate to bring up an old topic but ive been trying to figure out how to fix this exact problem for years.... any info?
 
yeah ive been having this problem for 3 years and no one knows how to fix it. i dont wanna go the route of buying a new shifter. im assuming there is a simpler fix. if i do need to buy a new shifter does anyone have a model number for the sst shifter for a 2001 v8
