So started to take it apart since some of my new dash pieces are coming in. Surprisingly I didn't need a new wire harness since its the same as my expedition. But there is a 3rd harness that connected to the stock radio that has no place for the new unit. I am big on keeping all my stock features. Is this the steering wheel control?

No, it is not. Steering wheel controls are on the main connector. You will need an adapter to use them with aftermarket. The extra connector is a data bus that aftermarket can't use.

What data does it relay?
I bought the steering wheel controls along with my other harness' but they haven't arrived yet. I was able to get a head start due to the cars using the same harness.

The 16 pin has the corporate audio protocol bus. This is where a CD changer or satellite receiver would talk to the headunit. The 6 pin has the corporate standard prototcol bus. This is where the radio finds out what speed the car is going and when the driver's door is opened.

The steering wheels controls are on the 24 pin connector. The white/black wire and the black/red wire. It's just an analog signal.
