2001 Lincoln ls wont go in reverse ???

2001 lincoln ls sometimes wont go into reverse. What could be the problem? I searched online and some said it was the gear shift cable that needed to be replaced. Anybody here ran into this issue? I was thinking jus replace the tranny and the problem will go away. What are you guys thoughts on this.

i was only considering it because it was dirt cheap and it has a west wing bodykit. By the looks of it, it looks clean. Except for the reverse issue

So, worst case it is a $3K problem.
