Hi Guys
I recently went thought a trying ordeal with an ABS warning light scenario.
While peacefully driving at 40 mph, out of the blue comes a check ABS warning light. I borrow an Actron Brake Scan tester from a friend's shop and it reveals both input signals from the rear ABS sensors are missing (codes: C1235 and C1236) . I check both rear ABS speed sensors and they compare favorably with the front ABS sensors reading 28 ohms in forward bias and open in reverse bias with a Simpson 260 ohm meter. I then check for continuity to the ABS Control module and both left and right continuity measures fine from both sensors. Just to be sure, I then replace both rear ABS speed sensors with no resolution of the problem.
So I resolved it must be the ABS Control module, which I found at a local boneyard for the reasonable price of $55. I replace it and it seems to work for a short while (3 miles) and then the ABS light comes on again intermitently, particularly if I turn off the Traction control and spin the tires. This weird senariorio continues until until I finally buy an ACTRON CP9580 Auto Scanner Tool and reset all residual failure codes in the MK 8's ABS/OBDII memory. (I probably could have done the same with the friend's Actron Brake Scan, but 20 years after OBDII came out I really needed to get up to speed with auto test equipment) ALL IS NOW FINE !!!
GOD forbid, I was thinking of dumping the MK8 !
HERES A NOTE OF WARNING: if you can find ABS Control Module or ABS Sensors (front or rear) for a 1998 at a Boneyard ... BUY THEM NOW !!! The 1998 ABS sensors are unique to that year and Lincoln only made 18,000 MK8's in 1998 and the ABS Sensors have been out of availability since 2005 either from Ford or aftermarket suppliers. THE ONLY SOURCE IS THE DECLINING BONEYARD MARKET !!!
