I am now 4 days into my new car and have some questions that maybe someone has an answer to. First, with the hood open can anyone else hear the ticking of the injectors/coils? Second, are there any benefits to keeping the plastic housing on top of the engine. Both my LS's i have removed them simply because i'd think they would have better airflow = cooler underhood temps for the intake runners, OR is the foam on the cover helping insulate the intake runners from heat? Third, I noticed a new cap under the hood. It looks like a radiator/coolant cap right in front, is that what it is and if so, why is it there? Thanks

If the ticking goes away (or lessens) after the engine warms up, it's probably a cracked exhaust manifold (or it may be an exhaust manifold gasket problem). As the engine warms up, the metal expands, effectively sealing the crack, so it goes away. It seems to be a fairly common problem on LS V8s. I think my '04 had it, but I traded it in for an '06, so it's Not My Problem(tm). :D

The coolant cap is in the back driver's side corner of the engine compartment, by the hinge. The only caps I can see under the hood are the washer fluid reservoir (behind the passenger side headlight); the power steering fluid reservoir (between the engine and wheel well on the driver's side); the brake fluid reservoir (on the firewall between the engine and wheel well on the driver's side); and the coolant reservoir (location mentioned above). This is true on both my '06 and my previous '04, at least in the pictures I have.

Geez...i thought it was a given. Its a '05 LS V8. When i had the hood open and engine running i could hear the coil/injector ticking, i am sure thats the sound just didnt know if it was normal. But below is the cap i am talking about.

yes that's a radiator fill cap. how else would you add coolant? As for the light ticking, mine does it too....pretty sure it's the injectors. lastly, as for the cover, there's a lot of heat insulating and sound deadening material in there. I would be a little nervous about removing it as it should make things noisier and my bigger fear would be cause the hood to overheat and possibly cause paint damage.

Yeah, that looks like the radiator cap. I didn't see it in the pictures I have because it's under the engine cover.
