Ok, here it is peoples. I have an 02 ls with 72000 miles on it. I have always kept up with my oil changes, I use Royal Purple oil. Now I haven't done my transmission flush, nor changed my spark plugs or coolant, and I didn't do an fuel filter change. Now I'm noticing some problems going on as far as when my car has warmed up and is idling the idle goes down like something drew power from the engine then goes back up. Also when I hit the highway and floor my ls I'm aware of the delay, BUT when its gaining its speed it like stutters. So I dont know where thats coming from. those are the 2 major things I have in my ls. So I'm asking what measures should I take to get my car running right again? Thanks for the help.

Igntion coils, my car did the same thing.. when it idles it feels like its boggin down about to shut off, also when I get up to about 45+ speed the car would stutter or delay. Changed the igntion coils (cop- coil on plugs) spark plugs and valve cover gaskets.. problem solved..
If you did it yourself would be about $100 for the coils (if you get ebay coils, or $200 for motorcraft which is in your car now) $50 I think for your spark plugs (go with motorcraft, my opinion) and the valve cover gaskets you should replace because I am sure they are going bad.. they almost always do and those are like $100.. I think I spent like $300 all together to fix my stutter problem. Also bought a fuel filter, $12 bucks or so.. Either way you can take many routes, get the VCG from max at Five Star Ford. Good Luck

I do not know a lick of knowledge of being a mechanic so the shop is going to be doing it. So do you think I should order all the parts then bring them in? and where should I order them from. Also does the 6-700 include the transmission flush and coolant change? or do I need it?

If you're talking about a Ford/Lincoln dealer, then no $700 won't get you everything.
Your transmission is not due for fluid exchange yet (150K miles according to Ford), but many insist of changing it more often. If you do decide to have the fluid changed, use a Ford or Lincoln dealer, not some chain place. You want someone who has the tools and knowledge to get the fluid level set right. I'd wait until after the other work is done. If after changing the coils you still have the stutter, then you'll need to replace the solenoid valve assembly in the transmission. It would be a waste to do the fluid change before that.
You are past due on the coolant flush. You really should have that done. Get a pressure check done too if you can. You'll find that you need at least the degas bottle changed. It's cracked by now.
You should also get the fuel filter changed. You'd be amazed at how much dirt it traps. If any gets past it, then you'll have injector problems.
You may also want to get the IAC cleaned. It could cause your problem at idle. Otherwise, the coils are a good guess and likely to be some or all of the problem.

It controls the engine idle speed. Ford calls it an Idle Air Bypass Valve, but most of the rest of the would calls them IAC.

Where ever you take it make SURE they give you the old parts back. Be sure to ask for them before they take the car in. The rear plugs may seem challenging to a half-a** mechanic. If you get all the old parts then you know the new ones went in.

Or, that he had some other old ones laying around and ready for this request. If you don't trust your mechanic, find one that you can.

At around that same mileage, my 02 LSE with V8 engine also had the same symptoms. They gradually got worse. (cruise control would be on, then sudden increased, then decreased acceneration.)
I ended up getting all 8 coils from that ebay seller and 8 Bosch +4 (i know..many here hate those plugs) spark plugs, and having the Ford dealership replace the valve cover gaskets (when I checked the old OEM spark plugs the wells were wet), then the spark plugs and coils. I think the total labor from the dealer was around $600 or $700, not including the cost of those parts. That was about 2 or 3 years ago. Car has run flawlessly ever since.
At 90k, I did opt to have the Ford dealership replace my transmission fluid. I figure I'll have it done once in my entire ownership..so no big deal.
By the way..I'm at 122k miles, and this car is excellent. I kinda want another car..but cant see myself giving this thing up in the condition it's in right now.

Ok people I took my car to the dealership and the rep said. He has to do a diagnostic ecc check or something. So I guess he would call me and tell me what shows up. I told him I wanted everything you guys listed and he said lets do the check first because I might not need all coils and plugs replaced. But should I still do it? Also he said each coil cost $111.
All of that is overpriced by about double.. But what do you expect from a dealership. Unless that is covering labor.. which im sure it isnt. $5 a plug $50 vcg $50 each coil $75 Degas bottle $15 or less for a filter.. what a Fukin joke..

I may be wrong, but V8's don't have pcv's, and yes, you want to get all of the coils changed, because sooner or later they will all fail.

If you have to pay the dealership to do it, then you might as well just replace the bad ones, I don't think they charge any less to do them all at once than they do for one at a time.
They're really not that hard to do yourself. You should find a friend who can do stuff like this, and get him/her to teach you.

Not for the V8, the V8 doesn't have one.
This is what many of us did. Replaced all 8 coils for under $150. When the dealer replaces JUST the one that shows up as bad? Within weeks, another old coil often fails intermittently. It drives you crazy, and may or may not show up on their computer as being bad. But it is. So you get hit with diagnostic time, and no repair. Until that coil FINALLY triggers a CEL light.
sooo..what many of us have done, is just replaced ALL the coils when one acts up. For $114, thats cheaper than one hour of diagnostic labor at the dealer.
