I had the leather replaced on my drivers seat a few years ago and I noticed where I sit there looks a crack in the vinyl. Is there a way to mend that?

i have a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, and I'm getting rust where the quater panels and the rocker panels mate. The body shop guy suggested trying to remove the seam all together and connecting the two pieces together with a piece of sheet metal. Has anyone ever done this on these cars, dose it work?????
